Core Values That Guide Your Daily Choices
Engaging in creative activities like crafting a values collage can help you connect with what truly matters and bring clarity to your decisions.
When Every Choice Feels Uncertain
Have you ever faced a big decision and felt completely stuck? You weigh the pros and cons, ask for advice, and still feel unsure about which path to take. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Decisions become clearer when you know what truly matters to you. Your values act as an internal compass, helping you navigate life’s choices with more confidence and less second-guessing.
If you're ready to reconnect with what matters most, I share weekly exercises and reflections like this in The Creative Shift, my newsletter for women in STEM looking for calm, clarity, and creative space. You can sign up here to start receiving it.
If you’ve been feeling uncertain, pulled in different directions, or overwhelmed by options, it might be time to take a step back. Instead of focusing on the decision itself, let’s focus on what grounds you—your core values.

Why Understanding Your Values Changes Everything
When you’re clear on your values, decisions feel lighter. Instead of questioning every choice, you begin moving in a direction that feels right for you.
People who have a strong sense of their values often experience:
- Easier decision-making. When you know what matters, the right path becomes clearer.
- Greater fulfilment. When your actions align with your values, life feels more meaningful.
- More resilience. Your values act as anchors, keeping you steady during challenges.
- Stronger self-trust. You rely less on external validation when you know what truly matters to you.
If decisions have felt confusing lately, it may not be because you don’t know what to do. You might just need more clarity around your values.
Take a moment now. What are three qualities or principles that have always felt important to you?
A Story: Marion’s Moment of Clarity
Marion sat at her desk, staring at two job offers. Both were exciting in different ways, but no matter how many pros and cons lists she made, she couldn’t decide.
One position offered prestige and financial growth. The other promised more balance and creative freedom.
In her frustration, she paused and asked herself, When have I felt the most fulfilled?
She thought back to past moments—collaborating on a project she was passionate about, having time for creativity, feeling energized rather than drained. A pattern emerged. Creativity, collaboration, and balance weren’t just things she enjoyed. They were her core values.
Once she recognized that, the decision became clear. She chose the role that aligned with those values, and the weight of uncertainty lifted.
Values provide clarity, not just for big decisions but for everyday choices, habits, and relationships.

Your Values Are Allowed to Evolve
One of the biggest misconceptions about values is that they never change. In reality, your values may shift as you grow.
What mattered most to you five years ago may not be the same as what matters today. That doesn’t mean you’ve lost your way. It simply means you’re evolving. The important thing is to check in with yourself regularly.
Simple Ways to Stay Connected to Your Values:
- Write them down and revisit them each month.
- Before making a big decision, ask yourself, Does this align with my values?
- If something feels off, reflect on whether a core value is being ignored.
When your actions and choices align with your values, life feels more purposeful and less like you’re just going through the motions.
Reflection Prompt. Are there any small shifts you could make today to live in greater alignment with your values?

Final Thoughts: Your Values, Your Compass
If you’ve been feeling lost or unsure, remember this. You already have the answers within you. Your values are there, waiting to guide you back to clarity.
Take the time to reflect, to pause, and to reconnect with what truly matters. The more you honour your values, the more confident and fulfilled you’ll feel in your choices.
