Feeling Good and Doing Good in STEM

Finding balance: reflecting on your goals and well-being, embodying the connection between feeling good and doing good in STEM careers.Finding balance: reflecting on your goals and well-being, embodying the connection between feeling good and doing good in STEM careers.

I know how easy it is to measure success by achievements, milestones, and external validation. In STEM* fields, it often feels like everything revolves around measurable outcomes and deadlines. But have you ever reached a goal and still felt...empty? Like something was missing despite the accomplishment?

That’s because well-being isn’t about one single thing. It’s about balancing two key dimensions: feeling good and doing good. One focuses on emotional well-being, while the other is about purpose and contribution.

If you're interested in creative ways to support both sides of that equation, I share weekly prompts and tools in The Creative Shift, a newsletter that helps women in STEM reconnect with calm, purpose, and reflection. You can sign up here.

Today, let’s talk about how these two dimensions show up in your life, why they both matter, and how small creative practices can help you find a healthier balance.

Understanding the Two Dimensions of Well-Being

Well-being isn’t just about being happy or achieving goals. It’s about the interplay between two essential dimensions:

  1. Feeling Good: Experiencing emotions like joy, calm, and gratitude.
  2. Doing Good: Finding purpose, meaning, and a sense of accomplishment in your work and life.

You might have one without the other. For example, you could feel happy in a fleeting moment but still lack a sense of long-term purpose. Or you might achieve great things while feeling emotionally drained and disconnected.

Thriving happens when these two dimensions are in balance. True well-being comes from nurturing both sides.

Reflection Question: When you think about your daily routine, do you notice an imbalance between feeling good and doing good?

Meera’s Story

For years, Meera measured her success through publications, promotions, and accolades. On paper, everything looked perfect. But she couldn’t shake the hollow feeling that followed every big accomplishment.

One evening, while cleaning her desk, she found an old sketchbook. Without thinking, she sat down and started drawing. For the first time in months, her shoulders relaxed, her breath slowed, and she felt...content.

That small moment changed something. She started carving out short windows of time for creativity. It wasn’t about producing art; it was about feeling good in a way that balanced her constant pursuit of doing good. Slowly, Meera began to feel more fulfilled.

The Science Behind Feeling Good and Doing Good

Both dimensions play distinct roles in your overall well-being:

  • Feeling Good: Positive emotions like joy and gratitude improve mental health, strengthen relationships, and enhance resilience.
  • Doing Good: Meaningful goals and a sense of purpose provide long-term satisfaction and direction.

But leaning too far in either direction can create challenges. Over-focusing on achievement can lead to burnout, while neglecting purpose might leave you feeling directionless.

Reflection Question: Which dimension feels stronger in your life right now? Which one feels neglected?

Creative Activity: Well-Being Balance Chart

Objective: Reflect on your current balance between feeling good and doing good.

Materials Needed:

  • A blank sheet of paper
  • Coloured markers or pens

Instructions:

  1. Draw two columns on your paper. Label one Feeling Good and the other Doing Good.
  2. Under Feeling Good, list activities or moments that bring you joy, calm, or contentment.
  3. Under Doing Good, list tasks or goals that give you a sense of accomplishment or purpose.
  4. Use colours or symbols to represent how much time or energy you currently dedicate to each column.
  5. Reflect on your chart. Is there an imbalance? Are there activities you wish you could prioritize more?

Reflection Prompt: What small adjustment could help bring these two dimensions into better balance?

If you’d like support in carving out more time for calm, creativity, and clarity, the 5-Day Creative Reset Challenge is a free resource to help you do just that. Each day includes a short activity designed to bring you back to yourself. Join the challenge here.

Creative Activity: Values and Emotions Map

Objective: Explore how your personal values connect with emotional well-being.

Materials Needed:

  • Blank paper or journal
  • Coloured markers or pens

Instructions:

  1. Write down three core values that guide your life and work.
  2. Next to each value, list emotions you associate with living in alignment with it (e.g., calm, pride, gratitude).
  3. Use shapes, colours, or lines to visually map the connection between your values and the emotions they evoke.
  4. Reflect on the map. Are there areas where your values and emotions feel misaligned?

Reflection Prompt: How can you create more opportunities to live in alignment with these values?

A Moment to Pause

Finding balance between feeling good and doing good isn’t about achieving perfection. It’s about noticing when one side feels heavier and taking small steps to shift your focus.

Creative exercises like the ones above aren’t just about art or reflection. They are tools to help you step back, notice patterns, and make intentional adjustments.

For Meera, sketching became more than a hobby. It became a bridge between her ambition and her need for calm. It reminded her that both dimensions deserve her time and attention.

Finding Your Balance

Well-being isn’t an either-or choice. You don’t have to pick between emotional satisfaction and professional accomplishment. Instead, it’s about noticing where you are right now and making small adjustments to bring those dimensions into balance.

Creativity offers a gentle space to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most.

Reflection Prompt: What is one small action you can take this week to nurture either your feeling good or doing good dimension?
